Kitchen at a Glance
Who lives here: A busy family that loves to cook and entertain
Location: Puget Sound, Washington
Size: 510 square feet (47 square meters)
The backstory: The original U-shaped kitchen was designed for a very tall person, so the countertop height was not functional for the new owners. Designer Alinda Morris established a more open layout with multiple cooking and prep zones.
Cabinets: The European-style white oak cabinets were custom made locally and feature a custom stain. Upper cabinets flanking the range have semiopaque glass fronts with frameless hinges.

Island: Reclaimed wood wraps the large island, which is topped with Neolith, a durable porcelain material that also covers the range hood. The island sits on casters so it can be moved around if needed.
Countertop: Iron Copper, Neolith

Lighting: Slim-profile pendants offer unobstructed views to the outdoors.
Furnishings: The island stools (Adam Brown) are dark brown faux leather and iron. The dining chairs were custom made prior to Morris working on the project.
Floor: Morris and the homeowners kept the original concrete floor, which has radiant heat.

Backsplash: Large porcelain tiles (6 by 48 inches) resemble wood planks. Morris set them in a straight pattern with one-eighth-inch grout lines and took them all the way to the ceiling for a dramatic effect.
Backsplash tile: Grigio color, Inessence collection, Pental Surfaces; more tile options
